Introduction to the LMITC
The Western Australian Light Manufacturing Industry Training Council (LMITC) acts as the peak training advisory body for the furnishings, textiles, clothing, footwear and leather industries.
Who is the LMITC?
LMITC is a not-for-profit, incorporated organisation and has been representing the training needs of the light manufacturing industries for over 15 years.
Today, LMITC is actively working with industry, associations, employee bodies and training providers to ensure the light manufacturing industries surpass the national standard of vocational education and training.
To ensure that effective management is maintained the LMITC is overseen by a Management Committee consisting of industry and employee representatives. This strategy ensure that current trends and practices remain an industry driven concept, whilst operating as part of a national network of industry advisory bodies to ensure the needs and views of Western Australia (WA) are represented at a national level.
Who are the Light Manufacturing Industries?
Light manufacturing, a component of the manufacturing industry, is a varied industry that has 32 distinct and associated industries ranging from processing of natural materials, production industries and production services.
These sectors are broadly described into two key categories:-
- Furnishings; and
- Textiles, clothing, footwear and leather.
What are Industry Training Councils
Industry in Australia has a strong voice in the vocational education and training (VET) system through a national and state/territory system of industry advisory arrangements.
A range of Industry Advisory Councils (ITCs) representing all industry sectors have been the key conduits of advice and information between the VET system and industry for over 20 years. These councils have provided a way for industry needs to be identified, communicated, and serviced and they have had primary responsibility for the development and maintenance of training packages.
Today, ten national 'Industry Skills Councils' have been established which the relevant State/Territory industry training council's feed into, providing:-
- an accurate National and State industry intelligence to the VET sector about current and future skill needs and training requirements, and
- supporting the development, implementation and continuous improvement of quality nationally recognised training products and services, including Training Packages.
Most industry training councils receive a small amount of financial support from State/Territory Government to assist with the administrative overheads.
In the case of the LMITC, support is provided through the WA Department of Education and Training.
